What do cigars change about an ethical whiskey and cigar night?
A whiskey and cigar night should open with what FDA says, because a large cigar can deliver 10 times the nicotine of a filtered cigarette. FDA’s wording on its cigar page, current as of August 2023: “Cigars are not a safe alternative to cigarettes and cigar smoke is at least as toxic as cigarette smoke”.
The rules around those cigars are unsettled. FDA extended its authority to cigars in 2016, and a federal district court vacated its decision to deem premium cigars on August 9, 2023; the government appealed on September 29, 2023 (FDA, page current August 2023). A September 11, 2020 order also vacated the deeming rule’s cigar warning requirements in 21 CFR 1143.3 and 1143.5; FDA says firms may still comply.
